Shady Grove UMC Launches Free Lending Library

In a heartfelt extension of its mission to serve and uplift the community, Shady Grove United Methodist Church has launched a new outreach initiative: a Free Lending Library. Nestled near the church grounds, this inviting little structure is more than just a box of books—it’s a beacon of connection, learning, and generosity.

Rooted in the church’s long-standing commitment to hospitality and service, the Free Lending Library offers neighbors of all ages the opportunity to borrow and share books freely. Whether it’s a child discovering the joy of reading, a parent seeking inspiration, or a senior revisiting a beloved classic, the library is open to all—no membership, no fees, just the simple joy of giving and receiving.

“This is about more than books,” said a member of the outreach team. “It’s about building relationships, encouraging curiosity, and showing that small acts of kindness can have a big impact.” The library is stocked with a rotating collection of fiction, non-fiction, children’s stories, devotionals, and more—many donated by church members and local residents. Visitors are encouraged to “take a book, leave a book,” fostering a spirit of shared stewardship and community care.  This initiative complements Shady Grove UMC’s broader outreach efforts, which include food pantry support, seasonal drives, and spiritual care ministries. The Free Lending Library stands as a visible, tangible reminder of the church’s belief that faith is lived out not only in worship but in everyday acts of love and service.  As the library continues to grow, the church invites everyone to stop by, browse the shelves, and perhaps leave behind a story of their own.  [Read more…]

Shady Grove UMC Introduces Community Food Blessing Box:

“Give What You Can, Take What You Need”

In a spirit of compassion and community care, Shady Grove United Methodist Church is proud to introduce its newest outreach initiative: the Food Blessing Box. This outdoor pantry, stocked with non-perishable food items, is open to all—24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The concept is simple yet powerful: Give what you can. Take what you need. Whether someone is facing a temporary hardship or simply needs a helping hand, the Blessing Box offers a quiet, judgment-free way to receive support. Likewise, those who are able to give are invited to place shelf-stable items—such as canned goods, pasta, rice, and snacks—directly into the box.

“This is about neighbors helping neighbors,” said a church member. “It’s a small gesture that can make a big difference in someone’s day.”

The Food Blessing Box is located just outside the church, easily accessible to anyone in need. It complements Shady Grove’s ongoing food pantry ministry and reflects the church’s deep commitment to living out Christ’s call to feed the hungry and care for one another.

As the seasons change and needs arise, the church encourages the community to keep the box in mind—whether to donate a few extra groceries or to find a meal when it’s needed most.

Together, we can ensure that no one in our neighborhood goes hungry.  [Read more…]
